چکیده

Postglottal flow in low-order dynamical systems modeling vocal fold motion is customarily considered one-dimensional. A relaxation distance is however mandatory before the flow effectively complies with this approximation. A continuous vocal fold model is used to show that this relaxation distance can impact voice simulation through the coupling strength between source and tract. The degree of interaction raises if relaxation occurs closer to the glottis, introducing complexity in the response of the system. 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

2D/3D hybrid structural model of vocal folds.

The spatial dimensionality of the vocal fold vibration is a common challenge in creating parsimonious models of vocal fold vibration. The ideal model is one that is accurate, with the lowest possible computational expense. Inclusion of full 3D flow and structural vibration typically requires massive amounts of computation, whereas reduction of either the flow or the structure to two dimensions ...

Regulation of glottal closure and airflow in a three-dimensional phonation model: implications for vocal intensity control.

Maintaining a small glottal opening across a large range of voice conditions is critical to normal voice production. This study investigated the effectiveness of vocal fold approximation and stiffening in regulating glottal opening and airflow during phonation, using a three-dimensional numerical model of phonation. The results showed that with increasing subglottal pressure the vocal folds wer...

Nonlinear vocal fold dynamics resulting from asymmetric fluid loading on a two-mass model of speech.

Nonlinear vocal fold dynamics arising from asymmetric flow formations within the glottis are investigated using a two-mass model of speech with asymmetric vocal fold tensioning, representative of unilateral vocal fold paralysis. A refined theoretical boundary-layer flow solver is implemented to compute the intraglottal pressures, providing a more realistic description of the flow than the stand...

Investigating the three-dimensional flow separation induced by a model vocal fold polyp.

The fluid-structure energy exchange process for normal speech has been studied extensively, but it is not well understood for pathological conditions. Polyps and nodules, which are geometric abnormalities that form on the medial surface of the vocal folds, can disrupt vocal fold dynamics and thus can have devastating consequences on a patient's ability to communicate. Our laboratory has reporte...

An immersed-boundary method for flow-structure interaction in biological systems with application to phonation

A new numerical approach for modeling a class of flow-structure interaction problems typically encountered in biological systems is presented. In this approach, a previously developed, sharp-interface, immersed-boundary method for incompressible flows is used to model the fluid flow and a new, sharp-interface Cartesian grid, immersed boundary method is devised to solve the equations of linear v...
